Každý hřbitov má bránu a každá brána má dvě strany.

The Gate That Opens Outward: All Souls’ Day as a Rite of Passage

Every cemetery has a gate, and every gate has two sides. On one side there is silence; on the other, life that is waiting. On All Souls’ Day we pass through it twice, there and back, and we usually fail to notice that the second passage matters more than the first.

🌒 Perhaps you are wondering why the direction should matter. The French ethnographer Arnold van Gennep noticed that rites of passage all over the world share the same skeleton. Whether it is birth, marriage or death, a person first leaves the ordinary world, then lingers for a while on a threshold where the usual rules do not apply, and finally returns among the others, transformed. Separation, threshold, return. Three steps without which the rite is not whole.

Try laying All Souls’ Day over them.

Separation is the journey. That long, cold walk I hated as a boy with my grandmother was not pointless. It separated the ordinary day from the holy one. A body that walks for kilometres through fog tunes itself to a different pace on its own. When we drive right up to the gate and leave ten minutes later, separation has no time to happen.

🗝️ The threshold is the moment at the grave. Folk belief held that on the night before All Souls’ Day the souls left purgatory and rested for a while among the living. Here the world of the dead and the world of the living touch. A threshold is a place where you don’t know what to do with your hands, where you feel strange and don’t understand why you are there at all. That is exactly how I felt as a child at the gate. Only now do I know that the strange feeling was part of the rite.

And now the question I am writing for. Where is the return today?

🔥 Bread once carried it. A woman carried it out of her home and handed it to the poor at the church or the cemetery. Grief returned among people in material form, as bread. The rite was complete. Perhaps that is why so many people feel a strange emptiness after All Souls’ Day. We light a candle, stand for a while, leave, and the return never happens. The rite is left hanging on the threshold like an unfinished sentence.

You may object that you don’t believe in souls in purgatory. That’s fine. A rite of passage does not need belief. It needs a shape.

🌾 You can create that shape at home this year with three gestures. In the evening, open a window and let the cold air into the room, so it is clear you are entering a different time. Light a candle, say aloud the name of the one you remember, and stay on the threshold for a while. And the next day, take something you have baked to someone who is alone. Only then does the gate open both ways.

Ticho, protože do kouta nikdo nechodí.

Nesekejte ho, nestříhejte suché stonky a nechte tam misku s vodou a pár kamenů.

The Wild Corner: The Garden’s Shadow That Keeps It Alive

🌾 Every house has a place we would rather not show our guests. The attic, the cellar, the drawer full of things we never got round to sorting. A garden has such a place too, or at least it should. It is the corner we never take the mower to, where stems dry out over winter and the soil stays bare.

To the neighbour, it is a mess. To the land, it is a home. In the shadow we want to hide, life goes on that no tidy lawn can offer anything to.

Who lives in the wild corner

🌑 The Jungian view holds that the shadow is not an enemy. It is the part of us we pushed aside because it didn’t fit the picture we want to show. A wild corner of the garden is that kind of shadow in the landscape. Look closely and you will find seven residents there who would vanish in a tidy garden.

A dry stem where a solitary bee spends the winter. A patch of bare soil, because most of our solitary bees nest in the ground. Shallow water in a dish or in a hollowed stone. A flower nobody sowed that the bumblebee still finds. The darkness under leaves where beetles hide. Silence, because nobody goes into the corner. And time, because nothing here has to be finished by Sunday.

🕯️ None of these residents looks good in a photo. Yet all of them keep the garden alive. Just like our own shadow: what we hide from visitors often carries a strength the polished facade lacks.

A small practice for this autumn

Choose one spot in your garden, on your balcony or in a window box and declare it a wild corner. Don’t mow it, don’t cut back the dry stems, and leave a dish of water with a few stones there. When you see in spring who has moved in, ask yourself what would happen if you let a corner like that live inside you too.

Stejná diagnóza, opačný mozek: co deprese vzkazuje esoterice

🧠 Lidé se stejnou diagnózou deprese mají v mozku někdy opačné vzorce. Co to znamená pro kameny, afirmace a rituály, které slibují úlevu všem stejně, a kde má symbolická práce s člověkem své poctivé místo.

Představte si dva lidi v čekárně. Oba mají v tašce stejnou zprávu od lékaře a v ní stejné slovo. Deprese. Druhý spí dvanáct hodin denně a ráno nemá sílu natáhnout ruku k vypínači. Kdyby oba zašli do stejného obchodu s minerály, odnesli by si nejspíš stejný kámen a stejnou kartičku s afirmací.

Vědci jich našli pět a některé šly přímo proti sobě.

Druhá skupina měla propojení slabší a příznaky mírnější.

🪨 Teď si vedle té studie postavme regál s kameny, afirmacemi a hotovými rituály proti smutku.

A kdo už nese tíhu deprese, dostane navrch ještě vinu.

A teď poctivě.

Možná proto potřebuje i pomoc s víc tvářemi, lékaře, terapeuta, blízké lidi a někdy i obraz, který řekne víc než dlouhé vysvětlování. Až vám příště někdo nabídne úlevu, zkuste si všimnout, jestli se vás nejdřív zeptal. Kdy se vám to naposledy stalo?

Same Diagnosis, Opposite Brains: What Depression Tells Esotericism

People with the same diagnosis of depression sometimes show opposite patterns in the brain. What this means for the stones, affirmations and rituals that promise everyone the same relief, and where symbolic work with a person has its honest place.

Picture two people in a waiting room. Both carry the same note from their doctor, and on it the same word. Depression. One hasn’t slept properly in weeks, because his head runs like a grinder nobody switched off. The other sleeps twelve hours a day and in the morning can’t find the strength to reach for the light switch. If they both walked into the same crystal shop, they would most likely leave with the same stone and the same little card with an affirmation.

One thing about that scene interests me. The shop and the diagnosis both treat them as one person. A new study from Helsinki suggests that this may not hold even inside their heads.

Five Brains Under One Diagnosis

🧠 A team led by neuroscientist Satu Palva, director of the Neuroscience Center at the University of Helsinki, measured brain activity in 263 people with depression and 75 people without it. They used a device that picks up the faint magnetic field the working brain produces, down to thousandths of a second. They watched how different parts of the brain talk to each other. The results appeared in the scientific journal Nature Mental Health.

You would expect one picture of the depressed brain. The researchers found five, and some of them pointed in opposite directions. In some people, brain regions passed signals to each other more strongly than in healthy people. In others, more weakly. Palva says it was exactly this contrast under one diagnosis that struck her most.

The groups also differed in what people were going through. In the first, where connections were stronger, heavy symptoms came together in almost everything, sadness, anxiety and thoughts that keep circling. The second group had weaker connections and milder symptoms. The third, with weakened connections across a large part of the brain, carried a strong mark of trauma. In the fourth, weak and strong connections mixed, and more severe depression came with substance use and low well-being. The fifth had the strongest connections of all, more substance use and less trauma. One word on the door, five different rooms behind it.

Where the One-Size Recipe Breaks Down

🪨 Now let’s put a shelf of stones, affirmations and ready-made rituals against sadness right next to that study. The card by the stone makes no distinctions. It doesn’t ask whether your head is racing or standing still. It works for anyone who pays.

A recipe for everyone is cut for the average person. Yet nobody has ever met the average person. It’s like a one-size suit that hangs off one man, chokes the next, while the shop insists it fits all. Neuroscientist Laura Bilbao Broch describes the same trap in Psychology Today magazine. When research mixes people with opposite patterns, the average result may describe none of them well.

The second problem is subtler. If one brain is overloaded and another subdued, the same advice may have two opposite effects. “Slow down and be still” may bring relief to someone whose thoughts keep running in circles. For someone who can barely get up in the morning, it may push them deeper under the covers. This is my own reflection; the study tested nothing of the kind. Still, I keep it in mind whenever someone promises one path for everyone.

The third catch shows up when the recipe fails. The stone wasn’t wrong, and neither was the affirmation. The person was, supposedly. Didn’t believe enough, didn’t open up enough, didn’t focus. A perfect business model, in which the product never fails, only the customer. And someone already carrying the weight of depression gets guilt on top.

Now, to be fair. Even science can’t yet choose a treatment from a brain profile. Palva says so openly: the measurement shows one possible route, but it isn’t yet enough to pick the right treatment for an individual patient. The five groups came from a single measurement of a single Finnish group of people. The researchers tested them by repeatedly drawing samples from their own data; an independent sample is still missing. People at risk of suicide or with psychosis weren’t included, and symptoms were measured with questionnaires. That is why the authors speak of candidate profiles, not a finished map. Anyone who turned this study into a new “what type of depression do you have” quiz would repeat the very mistake of the card by the stone.

A Symbol That Asks First

🃏 Even so, I believe esotericism can have an honest place in this story. It just has to turn around. Instead of “this will help you,” it should start with “what does this mean to you.”

Jungian psychology rests on exactly that. Carl Gustav Jung saw the symbol as the language of the unconscious, with no single dictionary meaning. A snake in a dream can remind one person of fear, another of transformation, and a third of a summer in grandfather’s garden. A card, a rune or an image holds no content until a person brings it. That is why such work suits the many faces of depression better than any recipe. It starts with a particular person and changes along with them.

It does have a clear limit. Symbolic work helps people name what they carry, find words for the weight and an image for the way out. It doesn’t replace treatment. It works best beside it, like a handrail beside the stairs. Someone who sees a doctor or goes to therapy and also draws their dreams or reads cards can draw on both. The trouble starts only when one pushes the other out.

Trust, but Verify

🔍 When someone does reach for an alternative, the old advice holds. Trust, but verify. Look for what leads you toward a solution, not just toward more promises. Three simple questions are enough.

The first asks whether the guide is interested in you first, or hands you something right away. Whoever offers a solution before knowing your story is selling a recipe for everyone. The second checks whether they work with your doctor or talk you out of seeing one. An honest guide knows where their work ends. The third looks at where they lead you. Good help lets you go further over time, while the bad kind keeps you coming back for the next purchase.

If sadness has held you for weeks, start with your doctor, a psychologist or a psychiatrist. In an acute crisis, reach out to your local crisis line.

Depression has more faces than fit on one card by a stone. Perhaps that is why it needs help with more faces too: a doctor, a therapist, people close to you, and sometimes an image that says more than a long explanation. The next time someone offers you relief, notice whether they asked you anything first. When did that last happen to you?

Říjnový hexagram je zářijový obrácený vzhůru nohama. V září jsi měl říct pravdu jemně. V říjnu se ukáže, jestli se někam vsákla. Neopakuj ji hlasitěji. Dej jí čas.

This isn’t the kind of strength that breaks down doors. It’s the kind that slips in through a crack. And stays until it moves you. Penetrating is about patience. About precision. About understanding first, and only then acting. Push too hard and things break. Work gently but persistently, and they change. This month isn’t for warriors. It’s for diplomats. The real ones. The ones who don’t stay silent out of fear, but speak with care.

Trigrams: Wind above Wind. Twice the gentleness. Twice the pressure. Invisible. Unstoppable.

Element: Wood and Wood. Growing through. Roots into the depths. Crown spreading wide. You can’t stop it, only guide it.

Deal with things slowly. But steadily. A little every day.
Don’t shout. Say it in a way people can actually hear.
Don’t get pulled into other people’s drama. Be the one who sets the tone.
Notice where the wind carries your attention. That may be exactly where you need to go deeper.

🔥 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒅𝒐𝒆𝒔 𝒊𝒕 𝒎𝒆𝒂𝒏 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒖𝒔 𝒎𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒂𝒍𝒔?

The Chinese calendar says that from 8 October to 7 November the Earth Dog month rules, and the Dog together with the Horse fans the fire. In plain words: tempers are shorter than they look. One sentence at work or over dinner, and it’s ablaze. Wind can whip a fire up, or lead it somewhere else. It depends on which way you blow.

October’s hexagram is September’s turned upside down. In September you were meant to tell the truth gently. In October you’ll find out whether it has sunk in. Don’t repeat it louder. Give it time.

The old book warns against those who push through by repeated force. Today that’s the third reminder with an exclamation mark, the fifth “so, have you done it yet?”, or an argument going round in circles. It leads nowhere except to embarrassment.

On 23 October comes Frost’s Descent. Nature is closing up shop. Your body wants more sleep, warm food and fewer plans. Slowing down now doesn’t mean falling out of rhythm. It means tuning into it.

A question for you: What would change if you stopped pushing and started influencing?

Noc má svůj dům a svůj práh: Hésiodos, Odysseus a tři otázky tmě

🌑 Odysseus vykopal jámu a čekal.

Není to starověký obřad.

The Night Has a House and a Threshold: Hesiod, Odysseus and Three Questions for the Dark

🌑 Odysseus dug a pit and waited. Into it he poured milk with honey, wine and water, sprinkled flour over them, and let the blood of a sacrificed sheep run in. The dead wanted to drink from it, and he held them back with his sword, because the seer Tiresias had to speak first. Only after him did Odysseus’s mother drink and recognise her son. Three times Odysseus rushed to embrace her, and three times she slipped through his arms like a shadow or a dream.

Jung used the Greek word nekyia for the journey of consciousness inward, into the deeper layers of the unconscious. That is the name of exactly this rite from the eleventh book of the Odyssey, the summoning and questioning of the dead. And in his alchemical studies he writes that one does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious.

That sentence can be laid against an ordinary room.

🚪 First argument: Night has a house.

In the Theogony, Hesiod tells that Night is born of Chaos and that her children are Sleep and Death. They live in her house, behind a great bronze threshold. Night and Day meet on it, greet one another and pass. The house never holds both at once: one always stays inside, while the other walks the earth.

Anyone who works with space knows that a threshold is not an ornament. It is the place where it is decided what enters the house. Hesiod put it between Night and Day, so that they would not meet under one roof.

🛰️ Second argument: we let Day across the threshold.

Night shines today. According to his post on the network X, the astronaut Don Pettit has documented for twenty-three years across four missions how city lighting changes from sodium lamps to LEDs. The older pictures show street grids in orange-yellow, the newer ones glow whiter.

In a single home the same thing shrinks to one small LED. A study led by Lu Qi of Tulane University and published in the European Heart Journal followed more than eleven thousand people from the British database UK Biobank. Light above three lux during night hours was linked to a left ventricle wall thicker by 1.5 percent among those most exposed to it. Three lux is at least ten times brighter than the brightest full moon, that is, the light that the night chose for itself.

I am not saying that light is the enemy. The study is observational, it measured light at the wrist, not in the street, and it shows a link, not a cause. Hong Kong even kept its sodium lamps, and not every city glows cold. It only seems that it was not Night who let Day across the threshold.

🌙 Third argument: you can put questions to the dark.

This is not an ancient rite. It is my adaptation of the image, and you can change it as you like. Switch off the light, sit on the edge of the bed or on a chair, and ask the dark three things. Do not wait for an answer in words. Just let it pass by, the way a shadow passed.

The first question: what did I overlook today. The second: what in me shone brighter today than it needed to. The third is Odysseus’s own: where am I actually returning home to.

Odysseus did not touch his mother even on the third attempt. The dark cannot be embraced or held. It can only be asked, and allowed to answer in its own way.

The night does not need us to light it. It needs a threshold on which we say goodbye to the day. Tonight, once you switch off the light, try asking.

Which three questions would you put to the dark tonight? Write them in the comments, I may borrow one of them.

🗝️ Literární vědkyně Sandra Gilbertová a Susan Gubarová pojmenovaly podle Berthy svou studii o ženských autorkách devatenáctého století, The Madwoman in the Attic, a nabídly k ní zajímavé čtení.

Půdy mají i instituce

🪜 Vezměte papír a nakreslete dům o třech podlažích.

Z těch tří vyberte tu nejmenší a týden ji noste s sebou.

The Woman in the Attic as the House's Shadow: What We Hide from Visitors

🪑 Rochester's wife from the novel Jane Eyre is more than a ghost in the attic. She is the shadow of the house, locked away before guests arrive. I'm adding an exercise for inviting her into the living room.

🏚️ Every house that has stood long enough has a place where we put away whatever doesn't suit company. A broken chair, a suitcase of letters, a coat that belonged to someone who won't be coming back. The attic has the advantage that guests never go up there, so it seems to us that the things stored there are not in the way. They are in the way. They just are quietly about it.

Literature has named this place better than any manual on tidiness. In Jane Eyre, Charlotte Brontë hid beneath the roof of Thornfield Hall a woman who is never spoken of in the house. Bertha Mason, the master's wife, is locked in the attic, and the guests are not supposed to have the slightest idea she exists.

The Double in the Attic

🗝️ The literary scholars Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar named their study of nineteenth-century women writers, The Madwoman in the Attic, after Bertha, and offered an interesting reading of her. In their view, Bertha is not merely a threat but the dark double of the heroine, doing what Jane herself would never be allowed to do: get angry and defy. On the surface of the house there is no room for such feelings, so the attic is what remains for them.

Jungian psychology calls this the shadow. Carl Gustav Jung used the term for whatever we don't want to know about ourselves and therefore push out of sight, be it rage, desire, ambition, or an ability that doesn't fit our role. The attic is then the way the house copes with company. As long as the doorbell is ringing, only the living room exists.

Institutions Have Attics Too

🕰️ The same mechanism moves from houses into organizations, only instead of an attic it uses words like protocol, operations, or consideration. When someone is "moved to the back" during an important visit, they are turned into Bertha for an hour. In this sense, the Eiffel Tower employees who refused to disappear refused the attic. An org chart can send a person to the attic without a single stair creaking.

Notice how organizations talk about the people who don't suit the guests. They call them back-of-house, logistics, or the rest of the team. Back-of-house is just an attic with better marketing.

🌙 What has been stored away does not vanish on its own. Perhaps you know this from your own life, perhaps from Jungian theory, but a thing that is locked up finds its way out through another corridor. Anger disguises itself as fatigue, ambition as dissatisfaction, truth as sarcasm that explains nothing to anyone. The house then looks tidy, and at night something knocks inside it.

In fairness, I must add a caveat. Not everything lying in the attic is treasure, and not everything belongs in the living room at full strength. Gilbert and Gubar also point out that a woman should not be forced to choose only between the angel downstairs and the monster under the roof. In their view, both roles are oversimplifications. Still, the question remains of how to bring something down from the attic without the ceiling collapsing.

Exercise: A House of Three Floors

🪜 Take a sheet of paper and draw a house with three floors. On the ground floor, write what you show to visitors, that is, the qualities for which people praise you. In the cellar, write what you inherited from your family and never examined. Under the roof, write three sentences you would not say out loud at a meeting, for example: "I'm angry." "I want more." "I disagree."

From those three, choose the smallest one and carry it with you for a week. On the first day, simply say it aloud at home, so the house can hear it. The next day, say it to one person you trust. Nothing more. The goal is not to throw open all the windows and shout out of them, but to open the attic door a palm's width.

Observe what happens after you say it. Sometimes relief comes, sometimes shame, sometimes emptiness, and each of these reactions tells you how long the sentence had been locked away. Don't judge it. An attic isn't cleared out in an evening, and no one is rushing you. Some sentences have their own safe place, such as a diary or a confidential conversation, rather than the boardroom table.

A house is either whole, or it has a few locked floors beneath it. The visitor leaves within an hour, but the house stays for a lifetime, so it is worth making room in it for everyone who lives there, even for those who so far make themselves heard only from the attic. Which sentence would sit under your roof first?

Hvæs Orms (Sykot hada)

Píseň o tom, že všechno, co nás živí, si bere svou cenu — voda, chléb, oheň i to, co dáváme sami sobě. Původní český text z roku 2013 přebásněný do staré norštiny, protkaný autentickou invokací ze slok Hávamál.

SYKOT HADA

všechno, co dává nám pít
je jako ta voda
co padá
hledáme všichni svůj klid
kdo nám ho prodá
sykotem hada

Nedali mi chléb, ani roh na pití;
hledal jsem dole,
zvedl jsem runy,
s křikem jsem je vzal,
a padl jsem zpátky odtud.

všechno, co dává nám chléb
nosíme svoje hadry
a v nich smích
běžíme a před námi tep
v tom běhu spadly
sny na tvůj sníh

všechno, co dáváme si sobě
je krok za krokem
životní běh
spálená jsi od od pochodně
musíš být cvokem
vzdát se i mně

Vím, že jsem visel na větrném stromu,
devět celých nocí,
kopím zraněn a dán Óðinovi,
sám sobě dán,
na tom stromu, o němž nikdo neví,
z jakých kořenů roste.

vzdát se... i mně...
sám sobě dán...

Hvæs Orms (Hiss of the Serpent)

🐍 A song about how everything that sustains us takes its price — water, bread, fire, and what we give of ourselves. Original Czech text from 2013, reworked into Old Norse verse, woven through with an authentic invocation from the stanzas of the Hávamál. Link to the song in the commentseverything that gives us drink

is like the water
that falls
we all seek our peace
who will sell it to us
with the hiss of the serpent
They gave me no bread,
nor a horn to drink from;
I searched below,
I took up the runes,
screaming I took them,
and fell back from there.
everything that gives us bread
we wear our rags
and laughter within them
we run, and ahead of us a pulse
in that running fell
dreams onto your snow
everything we give to ourselves
is step by step
the running course of a life
you are burned by the torch
you must be mad
to give up even me
I know that I hung on a windy tree,
nine whole nights,
wounded by a spear and given to Óðinn,
myself to myself given,
on that tree of which no one knows
from what roots it grows.
give up... even me...
myself to myself given...
